Wigan Wheelers
Wigan Wheelers Cycling Club, as the name implies are based in Wigan, Lancashire. We are a friendly club and new members are always made to feel welcome.

We cater for anyone whether it be leisure or racing. The club organises several "Open" events during the racing season (March - September) and we also have a Club Competition for Championships from Youth to Veterans.

The racing section of the club participate in a good many events during the season, these include time trials (solo and tandems ) over 10, 25, 30, 50 and 100 miles as well as 12 hour and 24 hour events. We also have members who compete in road races, on the track, and in winter cyclo-cross races.

During the winter months we hold turbo training sessions, these are carefully structured sessions that help towards the preparation for the racing season ahead. For the leisure cyclist we have club runs at an easy pace during the week and on Sundays.

If you are interested in any form of cycling and would like to get involved with the club either come down to the Wigan Cricket Club, Bull Hey, Parsons Walk, Wigan on Monday night's between 7:30 - 9:30 pm and have a chat with some of the members.

Sunday Club Runs

At present we have two groups riding out each Sunday as well as a club social ride for both groups every few months.

The general details of the club's weekly rides (CTC and the faster group) are shown below but check the forum each week for any changes or more info about routes and timings.

Plans for the social rides, and anything else out of the ordinary, will be highlighted on the home page and in the events diary as they become known.

CTC Group
Club Chairman Harold Woodcock leads a CTC group which aims to cover about 60 miles each week at a sociable pace.

The rides last about 6 hours, and this includes 2 cafe stops, so the riding speed is in the range 13-14 mph.

Bad weather may shorten the rides and the size of the group varies from a few to as many as twenty, again depending on the weather. The group meets at 9 am alternating between riding north from the Cherry Gardens pub on Wigan Lane and south into Cheshire from Ashton Library.

Faster Group
Ian Hughes leads a slightly faster group going from The Cherry Gardens pub on Wigan Lane EVERY Sunday.

They leave at 9 am with the aim of covering 50-85 miles, getting back between 12.30 - 3.30 pm depending on the weather, and usually with a cafe stop on the way.

The size of group is dependent on racing commitments, holidays etc. Any newcomers can be assured that nobody will get dropped and left to find their own way. Guaranteed!

Club Social Rides
Ian has also initiated the club social rides when the 2 groups join together every few months. The two rides to date have gone well with a number of members turning out who can't make it every week.

These rides also act as a chance for prospective new members to come along - the pace being gentle and the distance not so far. The next social ride is tentatively planned for mid march to go south to Cheshire - more details nearer the time.
